Wm. Malcolm 8x USMC Sniper Scope Is A Hit With GOLD RUSH Cast Members...

In the photo above, GOLD RUSH cast member Jack Hoffman stops by the Leatherwood/Hi-Lux Optics booth to take a look at a Model 1903 A3 that has been set up for Vintage Sniper Rifle competition - and to talk about the need for stringent wolf control. He loved the Hi-Lux Optics addition of the 8x USMC Sniper model to the Wm. Malcolm line of vintage riflescopes. When he picked up the rifle, his comment was... "Now here's a real rifle!"

Jack is from Oregon, and an ardent elk hunter. Like many hunters in that state, he now fears that wolves moving in from Idaho will deal elk and other big game populations a devastating blow. He truly likes the idea of owning a rig like he's holding here, with honest 500 to 600 yard effectiveness.

When he commented that he'd truly love to own a rifle and scope combination such as this, GOLD RUSH cast members Jim Thurber and Dave Turin jokingly told him that he couldn't afford it.

I asked, "Have you found enough gold to buy one?" Then quickly blurted out, "Don't tell me...don't tell me...I've got several more episodes to watch this season!"

It's great to see regular folks like these three making it with a great reality television series. My guess is, in the not so distant future, Jack Hoffman will be shooting a Springfield 03A3...topped with an 8x Wm. Malcolm USMC Sniper model scope aboard. I truly enjoyed spending 20 or so minutes talking gold and guns with him and his fellow cast members. - Toby Bridges

WM. MALCOLM 8X USMC SNIPER SCOPE A HIT AT THE 2012 SHOT SHOW!

In this photo, Desert Storm USMC veteran Mike Sexton sights through a prototype of the new made Hi-Lux Optics 8x USMC SNIPER scope that has been added to the company's Wm. Malcolm line of vintage rifle scopes. Needless to say, this scope was one of the BIG HITS at the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas January 17-20.

All of those shooters in the know, immediately called this scope a Unertl. Hi-Lux Optics is not. This is officially a Wm. Malcolm reproduction of the Unertl style scope that the Marine Corps used on sniper rifles of WWII, Korea and the early years of Vietnam. And each is marked with the Wm. Malcom name...the USMC SNIPER model designation, and serial numbered.

The idea for recreating this scope emerged about 4 years ago, when Mike Sexton, Hi-Lux Optics owner John Wu and I sat down and discussed it. Then it became up to Mike and I to convice John that it was a worthy endeavor. That took two years...and then a year of development and refining. Mike Sexton also owns and operates Ironsighter, Inc., which just happens to be the leading scope repair service in the country today. One of the areas he specializes in is rebuilding original scopes of this type. And the scope now offered by Hi-Lux is correct in every way.

The one comment heard repeatedly at the show was something to the effect of... "The only difference I can see between this scope and an original 8x Unertl USMC scope is that the Unertl never had optics this good!"

If you are into vintage sniper rifle shooting, check this scope out over on the Hi-Lux Optics website. This one retails for just $549...some originals in excellent shape have gone for more than $3,000. - Toby Bridges, HI-LUX OPTICS P.R.

ALL NEW Wm. Malcolm 8X USMC-SNIPER Scope!

One of the most recognized names in military sniping during the Vietnam conflict was Marine Corps marksman Carlos Hathcock. During his two tours, he was credited with 93 confirmed kills. The rifle he relied on for very precise long range shot placement was a Model 70 Winchester, of .30-06 caliber, topped with an 8x Unertl scope - very much like the rifle shown above (top photo). The accompanying USMC photo shows sniper LCpl. Dalton Gunderson with a similar rifle in Vietnam, sighting in on a distant target.

Scopes of this design, with micrometer click external adjustment, were once favored by long range precision shooters, and quite a few different scope manufacturers offered very similar models. Today, an original USMC marked scope in mint condition can sell for as much as $5,000 to $6,000. And with the current interest in shooting and competing with vintage style sniper rifles, just a working standard model scope in very good condition can still bring $2,000 or more.

Leatherwood/Hi-Lux Optics is now adding an extremely well built 8X USMC-SNIPER model to its Wm. Malcolm line of vintage style riflescopes. Not only will this scope match the originals for extremely precise adjustment of windage and elevation, the new made scope also offers the advantages of modern lens making, with fully multi-coated lens surfaces for maximum light transmission. This scope offers the brightest, clearest, and sharpest optics ever in a riflescope of this design.

The scope will be marked with the Wm. Malcolm name over the USMC-SNIPER model designation, and each will be serial numbered - as were the original USMC models. The Marine Corps utilized this style of scope on sniper rifles during WWII and Korea, commonly relying on the old WWI vintage .30-06 Springfield Model 1903-A1. (Modified specifically for sniper use, the WWII rifle was also known as the USMC Model 1941 Sniper Rifle - bottom photo.) During the Vietnam conflict, some of the earlier snipers, such as Carlos Hathcock, continued to rely on the external adjustment "target scopes" the Corps had adopted during WWII.

The new Wm. Malcolm 8X USMC-SNIPER captures the look, the precision and the accuracy capable with riflescopes of this type. And at the $549 suggested retail price, it is far more affordable than a serviceable original from the 1940s, or even the 1970s when they were still in production. Like all Leatherwood/Hi-Lux Optics, the Wm. Malcolm USMC-SNIPER model comes backed with a limited lifetime warranty.

2011 SHOT Show Was Greatest Ever!

In The Photo Above...

Standing, left to right, Toby Bridges (Outdoor Writer/Hi-Lux Product Promoton); John Wu (Hi-Lux Owner & C.E.O.); David Fourtier (Renowned Gun Writer); Timothy Yam (Field Editor of Shotgun News); Mike Sexton (Owner of Ironsighter/Hi-Lux R&D/Hi-Lux Waranty Repair); Alex Sergeev (Hi-Lux Product Engineer); Christy Steigers-Bridges (Toby's Far Better Half), Chris Tully (Hi-Lux Optics National Sales Manager), and, sitting, Mark Krebs (President/Owner - Krebs Custom Arms), during a break in the traffic at the 2011 SHOT Show, in Las Vegas, NV.

This year's show covered more than 600,000 square feet of exhibit space, making it the biggest, and certainly one of the busiest SHOT Shows in history. The traffic at the Hi-Lux booth was definitely the busiest ever, with more interest than ever in the ever growing line up of quality rifle optics.

"At this year's Shot Show, the majority of Dealers and Law Enforcement personnel that visited our booth showed extreme interest in our CMR1-4X24 scope. This year we also introduced our new Red Illuminated Reticle, which gained a lot of interest to the hunting customer. Also, this was the first year we had an actual Springfield M1A on display, with our M14/M1A mount attached. It was well received, and caught the eye of many walking by!. And, as standard every year, our vintage Wm. Malcolm scopes were extremely popular for that Single Shot enthusiast," said Chris Tully.

A lot of extremely serious sporting rifle owners, professional law enforcement & military tactical marksmen, hard-core hunters, and those looking for period correct optics for early muzzleloading and black powder cartridge rifles have learned that you can pay a whole lot more for rifle optics, but even at two or more times the price, you still cannot buy a better designed, better built riflescope than a Leatherwood/Hi-Lux scope.
